Keeping an Eye on the Bay

It’s the holiday season, and I’m grateful we can reflect on the past year with a smile. Your support has enabled Baykeeper to keep an eye on the Bay and defend it from the biggest threats. And that means you’ve helped make the Bay Area healthier for wildlife and safer for people. Thank you!

You kept our boat on the water to identify a rare algae overgrowth in the Bay – for a second year in a row. Our field team and skippers used the boat and drones to monitor water quality and dead fish. We identified the agencies responsible for allowing too much nitrogen and phosphorus pollution in the Bay, and now we’re advocating for stronger laws to prevent algae outbreaks in the future.

Annual Report cover featuring a field investigator on the boatYou supported our response to a kayaker’s tip about visible pollution along a shoreline in the Oakland Estuary. Our attorneys negotiated a legally binding agreement to address legacy heavy metal pollution that had been dumped over a facility’s fence for decades, and now our scientists are overseeing the cleanup to make sure it’s done right.

You helped us bring a new legal action to stop a long-time Bay polluter. After our drone patrol documented serial pollution by a chain of auto-wrecking businesses, we notified Schnitzer Steel that we’ll be taking them to court unless four of their facilities around the Bay Area stop dumping toxic pollution into streams and wetlands that flow into the Bay.

And there’s so much more to thank you for—you can read about the other great wins we’ve accomplished together in our new year-end report.

Next year we’ll be celebrating Baykeeper’s 35th year defending San Francisco Bay, and together we’ll be:

  • tackling fossil fuel pollution with our petition to stop coal trains from poisoning Bay Area cities,
  • protecting the Bay’s most endangered fish by enforcing the Endangered Species Act,
  • restoring freshwater flows to the Bay by challenging projects like the Sites dams and Delta tunnel,
  • and much, much more!

With you by our side, helping us to keep an eye on the Bay and defend it, I know we’ll make an even bigger impact for the health of our communities and wildlife.

Wishing you joy and peace this holiday season!
